Choices for Music Video

As I have decided to change my original ideas for my music video, I have had to look into different ideas for my new one.

Locations
For the locations of these photo shoots I am going to use a variety of different places. Such as a plain black, white and cream background, a forest/field, a brick wall and many others. As the theme of this song is travelling to find the other person, the more variety of locations I can use the better.

Actors
I have chosen Jamie Power as my first actor; I have chosen him as I feel he will be creative with the role, and will try to perform it to the best of his ability's. He has brown hair with blue eyes; he is taller than Tayla which is good because he can be the more dominate role. I also feel as he does drama he can act dramatically and creatively towards the role and experiment with different ways to play it.

For my second actor I will be using Tayla Roostan; I have chosen her because she has dark brown hair with brown eyes. She suits the role well as she is very enthusiastic and will put a lot of effort into this. Her and Jamie are both loud and creative, so they will work well together and will also have fun doing it as well.

Clothing
For clothing I would be putting both my models in a variety of clothes, for some shots I'd like them both in dark clothes and for others bright vibrant clothes like red. For Jamie jeans, t-shirts, work trousers, shirts and jumpers. For Tayla I'd like her in a bright coloured dress, and dark coloured clothes, for example trousers and a shirt.

Camera Angles
As for camera angles I will use a variety of different shots to capture my actors; for example I will use long shot to capture their whole bodies, mid shot, close ups and much more to make sure I capture their facial expressions and body movements.

Ideas

This is the video of the song I have now chosen to use. As it already has a video, I have to be careful not to copy any of the shots. However I will also be using the idea of travelling to the other person; but in my own different style.

I have many different ideas for different shots I can use throughout the video, but these are some of them.
  • Single shots of both models in front of a white background - midshot, faceshots from the front left and right, and shots of just their lips singing the words.
  • A shot of both models separately singing the whole song- long shot and mid shot.
  • Both models walking through different areas, to 'get to each other' - for example walking through a field of long grass or walking down the road, etc.
  • At the beginning of the song the words ''you'' and ''do'' are said repeatedly but louder and with more enthusiasm I'm going to use an effect on premire pro to add fireworks in the background of Jamie signing those words.
  • I might edit the travelling shots into black and white.

Lyrics

These are the lyrics to the new song I have chosen 'Meet Me Halfway' by Black Eyed Peas.

Ooh, I can't go any further than this
Ooh, I want you so badly, it's my biggest wish
Cool, I spend my time just thinkin', thinkin', thinkin' 'bout you
Every single day, yes I'm really missin', missin' you
And all those things we used to, used to, used to do
Hey girl, what's up? It used to, used to be just me and you
I spend my time just thinkin', thinkin', thinkin' 'bout you
Every single day, yes I'm really missin', missin' you
And all those things we used to, used to, used to do
Hey girl, what's up? Yo? What's up? What's up? What's up?
Can you meet me halfway, right at the borderline?
That's where I'm gonna wait for you
I'll be lookin' out night and day
Took my heart to the limit, and this is where I stay
Ooh, ooh, I can't go any further than this
Ooh, ooh, I want you so bad, it's my only wish
Girl, I travel 'round the world and even sail the seven seas
Across the universe, I go to other galaxies
Just tell me where to go, just tell me where you wanna meet
I navigate myself, myself to take me where you be
'Cause girl I want, I, I, I want you right now
I travel uptown, town, I travel downtown
Wanna to have you around, 'round like every single day
I love you alway-way, I'll meet you halfway
Can you meet me halfway, right at the borderline?
That's where I'm gonna wait for you
I'll be lookin' out night and day
Took my heart to the limit, and this is where I stay
Ooh, ooh, I can't go any further than this
Ooh, ooh, I want you so bad, it's my only wish
Ooh, ooh, I can't go any further than this
Ooh, ooh, I want you so bad, it's my only wish
Let's walk the bridge to the other side, just you and I
(Just you and I)
I will fly, fly the skies for you and I
(For you and I)
I will try until I die for you and I
For you and I, for, for, for you and I
For, for, for you and I, for, for you and I
(For you and I)
Can you meet me halfway?
Can you meet me halfway?
Can you meet me halfway?
Can you meet me halfway?
Meet me halfway, right at the borderline
That's where I'm gonna wait for you
I'll be lookin' out night and day
Took my heart to the limit, and this is where I stay
Ooh, ooh, I can't go any further than this
Ooh, ooh, I want you so bad, it's my only wish
Ooh, ooh, I can't go any further than this
Ooh, ooh, I want you so bad, it's my only wish

Final Change of Mind

Whilst editing and creating my final video I have been struggling to put across and think of a storyline that would work with the shoots I had for the video. I also discovered I had to re-shoot my model for singing scenes to add throughout the video to fit it all together. However my model is currently struggling to find any free time in between her new job that would fit with my timetable.
So I have decided to make a new video and shoot with new models. I have chosen 'Meet Me Halfway' by Black Eyed Peas; as I can still use all my scenery and travelling shots I had from when I went on Holiday and filmed. This will work because I can show my two new models; Jamie and Tayla, travelling towards each other from different places to 'meet halfway'.
I feel by re-filming and starting a new video, I will able to show more of my talents and skills towards editing and creating a video, and this will help me create a better video. As with the last video it wasn't showing my true potential in creating videos.

Change of Mind

After getting more audience feedback, I have decided to change the song to the original version by Disclosure. After letting a few people watch my video, and after getting their feedback I have decided to re-shoot some parts of my video.
I will be using all the scenic shots in the verses, and in the chorus I will be having Georgia lip syncing the chorus. I will use different shots  of Georgia singing, to create a variation of images. I will film Georgia from different angles and styles to create a variation; I will use mid-shot, close-up, long shot, low angle, high angle, etc.
I will either be shooting Georgia in front of a plain white background, a coloured background; a light yellow or orange colour. I'm also think of shooting Georgia in front of a white black ground to later on create a green screen affect, by putting the shots of Georgia on holiday and all the scenic shots behind her. This will create an affect of representing the holiday as a past event, so she's thinking about it.

Third Draft of Alevel Music

This is my third draft of my music video, I still haven't completed the video, as I feel the storyline isn't coming across, so I need to consider my options of how to betray my storyline better.

Amelia; Likes the song choice, she also likes how the song works with the fireworks, so when the beat goes off, so does the firework. She also likes the storyline, she feels that the storyline was about a girl that goes on holiday and about her life; she also feels like it’s about a relationship but you never see the boyfriend. She likes how I have added the fireworks more than once.

Sarah; Sarah feels both the pool scenes are too long, and that they need to be cut down. Some shots need to edited in terms of colour and picture, but otherwise she thinks its really good.

Becca; Becca likes the song, she also likes the fact that it actually filmed abroad, and that there numerous different locations. She also likes how it shows her journey. She feels its a disjunctive narrative. She likes how I have added the fireworks into the same beat in the song. She feels that if i had gotten shots on the plan it would've made more sense. Becca feels like i need to add more editing techniques. She likes the fact that I've choosen a song that is a remix, so its not well known popular song.

Abbie; Abbie likes the locations of the videos, and how its different in most shots. She also feels the lip syncing was really good, and stayed in time to the music. She feels that Georgia could've acted better, and looked less grumpy during some of the shots. Abbie doesn;t understand the storyline, which is a good point, because at the moment its a disjunctive narrative video. Abbie also feels that the fireworks shots are too long.

Current Draft of Music Video

This is the current draft of my music video. I have enlarged the sceen, so there isn't a black outter ring. I have also taken out the shot of Georgia talking to the camera, as it didn't work with the music.

Change of Mind

I have started to edit my music video and have watched all the footage I have taken so far, and I feel like it doesn't truly match the storyline I was planning to use for the song. So I have decided to change the storyline again too Georgia going on a travelling holiday, seeing as much as possible so she can discover her true self. By doing this I will be able to use all the footage I have taken so far, and I feel it will fit the footage and song more. Even though the lyrics are 'You and Me' throughout the song I think this will create a sense of her trying to find her soul mate, and by finding her soul mate she will discover herself.

Audience Feedback

I have asked several people to watch the video I have produced so far, and give me their honest opinions of how I could improve, what they like and what they dislike.

Susan -
Susan feels there are some fantastic shots so far throughout the music video. However she feels there is no storyline, and she doesn't understand where the storyline is going and how its going to end. Susan feels the scene where Georgia is talking into the camera doesn't work as she can't hear what shes saying and also that the scene of Georgia in the pool doesn't work, as the camera isnt stable enough. Susan also thinks for the chorus I should add a shot of Georgia addressing the camera singing the lyrics; she thinks that Georgia should be dressed up like she would be going out for the night. Susan also feels that I should reverse shot in the mirror for this scene, with a midshot closing up into her face landing on her mouth.

Tayla -
Tayla thought that the landscape shots were really good. There are some good transitions into different scenes, but she doesn't understand the storyline and Tayla feels that the video jumps from different scenes. Also one scene goes from night sky and fireworks, to daylight which doesn't contrast well. Apart from that she thinks its really good and well done so far.

Lily-
She likes the way it doesn't jump cuts, its solid throughout the video. Lily also likes how I filmed it abroad in America, rather than a typical video in England. She also likes how the fireworks and the beats work with the song; she also likes the shot where I'm filming Georgia biking, but I'm also biking behind her so it's following her.

This is the draft that everyone has watched and given me their feedback on.

Filming Update

Filming over the summer went well, I got a large amount of footage. I feel I have too much as I don't know where to start. So I am going to have to start again with the storyline, watch all the footage I took and think again about how to start and set out my video.
Over the summer, whilst I was on holiday I was filming the footage I have. I was planning to film in Graceland, however once I got there I was told I wasn't allowed to film. Which was really disapointing, so I only got a few shots of the sign post.

Questionnaire Results

I handed out 30 questionnaires to people that fitted my target audience. I have now received all of them back, and the outcomes were close to the results that would work and fitted my idea of my music video.

The main two that were the highest results where travelling and happy. These will be the two main themes and features in my video, along with upset seeing as it was the next one. Thankfully people chose the three that works with the storyline of my music video.

The audience felt that I should include an artist(s) in my video, which i agree with, I feel that without an artist the video would be missing a huge feel and theme to it.

Most people expect to 1-2 artists in my music video, I think this will work well with my video, as I have my main character Georgia, and I might have a second artist.

The three main locations the audience would like to see are, Scenic shots, indoors and outdoors. This is good as I'm mainly filming travelling shots which will work with my audiences choices of scenic and outdoor shots.

My target audience have mainly said 'Yes' to the question whether they'd want special effects in the video. I will do this by adding transitions and video effects, to please my target audience.

My target audience watch music videos mainly daily or a couple of times a week, which means they know what a good music video looks like and how it should be edited and presented.

The three main shots my target audience are looking for are the 'panning shot', 'long shot' and 'high angle shot'. These shots would work well in the video I am trying to create, as the represent the story well.

Youtube is the main place that my target audience watch music videos. I will be posting my shots I have taken, my music video in stages and the final version of my music video onto youtube; as I feel it is easier to be able to get online and watch.

My target audience believe that the music video is just as important as the song; and I agree with that as I feel the music video can tell the storyline better and also if the music video is really good it will make the song stay in the audiences head longer. It will also bring the audience to watch the video more and listen more if they enjoy the video.

After getting my tagret audience to listen to the song, I asked what storyline they'd feel would fit the song best. The audience thought a happy storlyine is more likely for the song, then a sad story line, then a party one and then a love sotryline.

Lyrics

These lyrics are from the original song, as I am using a remix version there are no lyrics posted and lyrics are rarely used throughout the song. Although I still felt that posting the original lyrics would be a good idea as through the remix it includes lyrics.

I’ll be giving up, oh
Home is where the heart is,
And I gave it to you in a paper bag
Even though it’s tarnished
You told me it’s the best you ever had
You got my secret combination
And I don’t be giving that out easily
With my deepest dedication
You can tell that you were brought the same for me

Chorus:
So please don’t let go, cause you know exactly what we found
So please don’t let go my darling
You keep me locked up underground
It’s gonna be you and me
It’s gonna be everything you’ve ever dreamed
It’s gonna be who and me
It’s gonna be everything and everything, we’re meant to be
We’re meant to be

Verse 2:
Rolling with the punches
So they won’t get inside our happiness
Love is always hunted,
But your arrows are soaring through my chest
Cause you know you give me something
Yeah you give me exactly what I need
Got my blood pumping
You know you always draw more blood, I bleed

Chorus:
So please don’t let go, cause you know exactly what we found
So please don’t let go my darling
You keep me locked up underground
It’s gonna be you and me
It’s gonna be everything you’ve ever dreamed
It’s gonna be who and me
It’s gonna be everything and everything, we’re meant to be

In you’re big house on the hills
Where you keeá¹— your dollar bills
And you stashed my heart
Somewhere in the dark
Keep it safe I know you will
Know you will, know you will
Know you will
I know you will

Questionaire

After listening to the song of my choice and having a few rough ideas, and a moodboard to support my ideas, I have decided to create a questionnaire to hand out to my target audience, to see what they agree with and disagree.

Asking Permition for use of the song

As the song I am using for my music video is a remix of the original song 'You and Me' by Disclosure, I am emailing the company that published the original song, as they are the rightful owner of that song.
In order to find the publishers of the original song 'You and Me' by Disclosure, I went onto the website ASCAP to find all the information. The print screen belown shows the information that the website gave to me; it included the four writers of the song, the two publishers and the performers 'Disclosure'.

As I was unable to find 'Salli Isaak Music Publishing' email address, as they do not own a website and no other details other than their location, I have only emailed 'Universal Music Publishing'. In the print screen below it shows what I emailed Universal Msic Pblishing to ask for permition for use of their song.

Change of Mind

Originally the storyline of my music video was going to be that; the girl went on holiday without her boyfriend, and missed him. I thought this was a stereotypical storyline, and didn't like the idea of how plain and simple it was. So after thinking of the idea that the girlfriend and boyfriend broke up, then she went on holiday, I changed it. I did this because I thought it would work better with the style of music video I have envisioned in my mind.

The fact that the girl will be constantly battling herself on whether to get in contact with him or not, I personally think would work well, as I will be able to capture that sense of desperate and depressed emotions through filming with certain lighting, locations and mise en scene.

Actor and Locations

Actor

For my main actress I will be using Georgia Dalton as my main character. I find that she suites the character role well, as she has long brown hair, green eyes, and pale but tanned skinned body; this shows that she can tan well in the sun but has a pale skin complexion.
Other characters will be people around the background, it will be people that have been in the shot of the video.

This is a picture of my model, Georgia.

Location

The locations of this video will be in Texas, South Carolina Hilton Head, Tennessee, Mississippi and England. I have chosen these places as Georgia and I will be doing a road trip around America and these are the states that we will be going. So I thought these would show a good sense of travelling. The shots in England will be done outside on the street and in a house.

This is one of the locations I will film in. This dock is in South Carolina, Hilton Head and every Friday night in summer the display a large show of fireworks. I am planning to film the fireworks show to add to the music video.

This will be the view from our balcony at the hotel in South Carolina, Hilton Head. I am planning to take scenery shots here and also shots of my model with the view in the background.

Ancillary Task 2 - Magazine Advertisement

This magazine advert is for the debut album of Jessie J titled 'Who You Are'. Already just from looking we are introduced to Jessie J as she is placed at the centre of the advert in a sort of medium, close up shot, this is effective as it tells the audience straight away who she is and people will begin to recognise her which will help boost her popularity and sales of the album. Already there is continuity between the magazine advert and the album cover which both use the same image, which as I mentioned before allows her audience to familiarise themselves with her. As it is her debut this being recognisable is key. The way the she is posed seems like she is opening curtains or a window, this could connote that she is coming out into the world and she is ready to rise and become famous. The way she is dressed not only makes her look classy but at the same time blends in with the colour scheme of the advert which denotes her style and the album being unique and personal to her. She looks directly at the audience which allows a connection with her fans. The font of the magazine advert is also reflecting on how she herself is dressed in a sophisticated, elegant way while also including a hand written title below her name, the style of the write could connote that her target audience is mainly female based, or that could simple be something that presents her to her audience. The mentioning of the 1 international smash 'Price Tag' brings the reader/audience to realise that a song that they might have enjoyed is featured and can grab their interest even if they have not heard it, because of it is a 1 smash worldwide it would bring them to want to listen and find out if her other songs are just as good, also mentioning the feature of an already famous artist will bring a variety of audience, and this is important for her as a debut artist to be able to draw in the fans.

Gwen Stefani 'Love Music Baby' we see the continuity again which is something all musicians have between their magazine adverts and album cover. We see Gwen's magazine ad and album cover (bottom left) are identical this makes it more recognisable. The colour scheme is another factor that will allow the work to be more recognisable as it is bright but still does it in a way in which Gwen stands out more so the reader is easily drawn to her face and will instantly know this is Gwen Stefani as she at this time she is very famous so a lot of people already know her or of her whether they have heard her music or not. The colour scheme also gives the image a sense of royalty as the colour gold is used a lot which we associate with money and royalty, connoting she might take herself as the queen of music, and this links into the fact that she is sitting on a throne and holding a crown again giving the image of high status. The font is consistent throughout only changing in size, but her name is the biggest font on the advert which again will grab the readers attention straight away as it is in gold and is big, this allows familiarisation again. Her facial expression seems seductive and she looks straight at the reader trying to draw them in to pay more attention and at the same time appeal to  her male audience and female audience a like as she is of an older age but still looks and carries herself as if she was young.

Straight away audience members who are familiar with Wretch 32' will notice the clever play on word he had used for his album title, making it more noticeable and appreciated which still being easy to say. Similar to Gwen Stefani's magazine advert we see continuity between the magazine advert and album cover as shown in the same bottom left hand corner, this makes the album recognisable, allowing the target audience to find it more easily whether they search online or in stores. The advert is given an urban vibe with the spray paint like effects to depict the flats in the background and the sky being made up of different shades of blue stripes also adds to the urban feel. The artist himself has the same type of spray paint on him connoting that he is of this urban environment and the way he is dressed also ties in. The artist doesn't look directly at the camera as to say that he doesn't want to connect with his audience as he is serious about his music, looking at the camera would require a facial expression which may make him look less serious about his music meaning he wouldn't be taken as seriously. The magazine mentioning who is featuring in the album will attract audience members who listen to there particular artists in order to see if they enjoy the music and this could lead to people enjoying Wretch 32 himself as an artist and because of this his audience will grow along with his popularity. And lastly it is mentioned where the album can be bought which would be helpful to his target audience as they would know where to search when the album us released.

Ancillary Task 1 - CD Album Cover

This album cover is for Avicii - Wake Me Up.
This CD Album cover shows the artist is the background, almost blended in to make the writing in white stand out more. The image is also simple, where the artist is looking away from the audience, he doesn't interact with them, he makes them wonder what he is thinking.

This album cover is for Daft Punk - Get Lucky.
Not much can be said for this album cover as, like many other album covers it is very simplistic, not a lot going on the cover, though when we look we know who's album it is as the masks are like an iconic trademark when it comes to daft punk as it is also what makes them unique and stand out from everyone else.

We Can't Stop - Single, Miley Cyrus
This album cover is for Miley Cyrus - We Can't Stop.
The image is quit blurred, which represents the way people see things once they've been at a party drinking all night,  which is what the album is going for to represent; as the image is of a party scene and not of Miley herself it represent the main focus of the song which is not stopping when they go out for the night. The fonts are bright and bold and stand out from the background image.

After researching front covers from current albums, that have recently been released, I decided to find CD's I have at home and see the different styles, codes and conventions they have.

These images show the inside pages of CD DigiPaks; the lyrics pages. By looking at actual media products, it helped me get a rough idea of how I would lay out my media product lyrics page.

On real media products this is the spine of a CD DigiPak. I noticed how they mainly have the name of the artist and the name of the album. This will help me design my CD spine as it will allow me to make a realistic spine for DigiPak.

These are real media products of the front page, these are rather simple, and just show the artists, with the album title and the artists name. This helps me when designing my front cover, as I can follow the simplicity to make it look as realistic as possible.

The back covers of real media products have the label companies logos, copyright information, bar codes, list of songs in that album and an image. These features will help me whilst designing my back cover as I can make them as realistic as possible.

MoodBoard

I have decided to create a mood board to show what ideas I have thought of for my music video. I've gone for a travelling theme for my video; such as travelling in a plane, a road trip, beach, pool, shopping and clubbing. As I am travelling around America I thought it would be the perfect for the travelling theme I have created. I will have to consider lighting for certain locations and times, because I plan to do some filming during the night, so I will have to use appropriate lighting to make sure you are able to see the main focus of the shot.
As I wont be in each location for very long, I will have to be careful with mistakes as I wont be able to go back to that location and re-shot. So I will have to shot a scene numerous amount of times so I have a variety to choose from.

Final Song Choice

Disclosure - You and Me (Flume Remix)

This is my final choice of song for my music video, as I feel I will be able to produce a video, that will work well with being mainly narrative. However I will be able to add performance scenes, showing the girl singing towards the camera, so overall the final outcome of my music video will be a mixture between narrative and performance. I have decided to cut thesong shorter, as the song is 4 minutes 41 seconds, this will be too long for my video so I will cut it down to around 2 minutes 30 seconds of 3 minutes, roughly.
I also think this song will work well as it is upbeat, by can be shown as a downbeat sad song; both of these will work well with my video idea concept, as she is happy because she is travelling around America, but feels alone because her boyfriend isn't travelling with her.
I will not be using the original version of this song as the song has a video already, and I feel I might lean towards copying some of the scenes from the video. However I think the song works well with the storyline, so I have found a remix, that would work just as well, maybe even better. In the remix, there are less lyrics, so I can use my imagination more and stretch to different ideas and scenes. Also I can incorporate scenic views to work with the video to show her whereabouts during the video, or where she is travelling too.

Storyline - Girl has gone on holiday, just after breaking up with her boyfriend, everything around her reminds her of him. She misses him and regrets the break up, so is continuously thinking of him. She keeps debating on talking to him, to re-start the relationship, but all brings herself not to do it.

Shot Ideas;
  • Girl looking at postcards to send to him
  • Car journey - hand out the window, flowing through the air
  • Travelling through the airport
  • On the aeroplane
  • Shot through the window on plane of the land underneath
  • Landing in America - shot through the window of the plan landing
  • People walking in the street around the girl
  • Swimming in the ocean or pool
  • Sun Bathing
  • Sends him a text message or receives one from him
  • Wakes up in bed stretching across to hug him
  • Hugs the pillow, because she misses him
  • Walking along the beach
  • Scenic views
  • Sat on the balcony looking at the view
  • Having a drink at the bar
  • People on the beach sunbathing
  • People swimming
  • Getting ready to go out
  • Eating her meals alone
  • Road Trip
  • Clubbing - strobe lights
I will be shooting this video in America, as I am going on holiday to Texas, South Carolina, Tupelo Mississippi and Memphis, Tennessee. I feel these locations will work well with my song and story line as the fit with the girl travelling and missing her boyfriend.

R&B Genre Research

I am considering using R&B Genre for the song used for my music video, therefor I have researched and analysed a pop music video.

Kiss Kiss - Chris Brown

The video starts off with different scenes cutting between a radio station, and Chris bBrown walking in a hall way. There's different edit shots, showing three/two scenes at one time on the screen. This video use;s bright colours, dance scenes. Its a performance and a narrative video mixed together. They use diegetic sounds of people talking in the video. The video use's girls as the main focus, showing how the male artists mainly focus on them. Chris Brown plays two charatcers in the video, the 'cool' guy and the 'geek' and shows how the 'cool' guy dominates the 'geek'. Untill the end when the 'geek' wins all the girls over the 'cool' guy.

Music Conventions of R&B Music Videos
  • Usually has a narrative
  • Close up of artists
  • Usually use special effects
  • Use alcohol, money party/club scenes
  • Women wear minuim clothing
  • Dance routine

Alternative Genre Research

I am considering using Alternative Genre for the song used for my music video, therefor I have researched and analysed a pop music video.

Imagine Dragons - Radioactive

The video starts off with a girl not in the band walking down a lane in the woods, with her hod pulled up over her head so its hard to see her features of her face. She is carrying a box that is covered, so it raises interest in the audience. It then focus on her eyes. Once the beat drops, it cuts from performance scenes of the band in a dark room, with dull coloured clothes, to the girl walking and then a arena full of people making bets. Throughout the song there are diegetic sounds of water droping, people cheering/screaming and deep breathing; this gives the song a more realistic affect. The video uses stuffed animal creatures that represent animals/people fighting in an arena, so people can make bets. The artists are stuck underneath the arena, where they drop all the 'defeated' and 'dead' stuffed toys. The girl then brings a tiny teddy bear to fight a stuffed toy that is unbeatable, once the unbeatable animal is defeated by the tiny teddy bear, she rescues the band and the tiny teddy bear defeats all the humans left.

Music Conventions of Alternative Music Videos
  • Usually narrative video, telling a story; following the lyrics of the song, or will be random
  • Usually a performance during the video, either singing of playing an instrument
  • Dark colours, not very bright
  • Sense of rebelling

Codes and Conventitions

The Style of Music Videos

Performance

Performance is when the music video consists mainly of the artist or artists performing during the video. This type of music video isn't very common, because target audiences are not able to engage fully with the song or video. Although if done correctly with proper studio lighting, costumes and dance performances, it can become a very creative way of making a music video. Which will make the audience interested in watching.

Narrative

A Narrative music video creates a story line, there are two different types of narrative videos; narrative Linear and fragmented A Linear narrative. Fragmented A Linear starts at the beginning of the story, goes through the middle, and finishes at the end. A fragmented narrative is a music video that jumps scenes, and doesn't show the story from the beginning to the end.

Mixture

A Mixture video is a combination of performance and narrative, this is the most commonly used music video. This is because it is hard to create a music video fully focused on narrative, or performance, by using both performance and narrative the video can be made more interesting for the audience to watch and enjoyable.

Cameo

A Cameo video is were a band or artist features in a narrative video but does not perform.

The Camera

Camera Shots; these are the most common shots used in music videos, however other shots are used, to show more creative ways of displaying scenes.

Very Wide Shot - This is were the artist is shown visible, but not the main focus in the frame. Emphasising mainly on the location and setting of the video.

Wide Shot - This is were the artist is the main focus on the screen but you can still see the location/setting in the shot.

Mid Shot - This shows the artist from her/his waist to head, focusing mainly on the subject but still showing the location/setting.

Medium Close Up - This shot shows the artist from chest to head, becoming a shot half way between a mid-shot and a close up.

Close Up - This shot focus mainly on the subject, showing either mainly the artists faces or an object, were the camera focuses closely on.

Extreme Close Up - This shot shows the artists face extremely close, for example the artists eyes to mouth, showing their emotions, thoughts, feelings or lip sycning.

Over the Shoulder Shot - This is a shot used a lot in narrative videos, to show what the artist is looking at, or who the artist is talking too.

Cut In - This shot is used in music videos to show something that the lyrics might be saying, for example the artist could be singing about an ocean, and the shot will be of the ocean. This shot is similar to a close up, but used very quickly.

Camera Angles

Camera angles play a huge part in emphasising the artist or to show emotions and expressions. Other camera angles that are simply the most common in music videos, are close ups, showing lip syncing, and extreme close ups were lyrics can be linked to visuals.

Eye-Level - This is a very common view being the real world angle that we are all use to seeing, it shows subjects as we would to expect to see them in real life.

High Angle - This is were the camera shows the subject from above, and the camera is angled down towards the subject, which has the effect of making them appear less power full, less significant or even submissive.

Low Angle - This is were the subject is shown from below, giving the impression of being more powerful or dominant.

Bird's Eye - This angle is showing the subject/scene from directly above, it can be used to add a dramatic effect or showing a different perspective. It can also show the positions and motions of different characters and objects, allowing the viewer to see things the character might not see.

Slanted - This is when the camera is slanted also known as a Dutch angle were the camera is purposely tilted to one side so the horizon is on an angle, this is creative is making interesting dramatic effects.

Camera Movements

The camera moves to follow the artist or to show the performance. These movements include panning and tracking. A director may choose to move action along by telling the story as a series of cuts, going from one shot to another, or they may decide to move the camera with the action.

Pans - This is were the camera scans a scene horizontally. The camera is placed on a trip of, which operates as a station art axis point as the camera is turned, often to follow a moving object which is kept in the middle of the frame.

Dolly/Tracking - This is were the camera is mounted on a cart which travels along tracks for a very smooth movement.

Editing Techniques

Editing is the process in which that concludes the making of the music video. When editing you cut down scenes, add special effects and add the track to the music video, etc...

Sound

Sound consits of mainly two elements, diegetic sound which is already present in the video and non-diegetic sound which can be edited in. Sound is the main element in a music video, as that is the reason people will listen and watch the video, for the song. People do this to gain a sense f art via different artist's. Sound, like video can be edited to create different effects and variations to the normal vocals that we hear.
Sound Parallel sound is when the music matches the mood of the video. An example would be if the song was slow then the video would also be if the song was slow the the video would also be slow to go with the mood of the song. Some music videos have diegetic sound, where they include sound from the surroundings, such as cars, people talking, this is to make the video seem more realistic. The music itself is non-diegetic sound.

Mise en Scene

The Mise en Scene for music videos focus mainly on lighting, props, costume, hair and makeup, location and colour; these elements usually depend on the genre of the music video and style. These elements are also important in contributing towards music videos, and the genre of music. They are used to convey the importance of the people in the music videos, set the scene and can be used to show emotions.
  • Lighting - how the scene is lit / artificial lights / side lights
  • Props - performance equipment, band merchandise
  • Costume - certain outfits
  • Hair and Makeup - style of the artist / certain appearances
  • Location - streets, parks, forests, beach etc
  • Colour - specific colours representing a mood or feeling

Lighting

The lighting in a music idea can create different views b the way the scene is lit, it allows the audience to recognise the genre and style of the music video. A bright light draws the viewers attention, but a scene can be lit by using - natural lighting i.e. from the sun of light sources, or by using artificial lights, Strobe lights and coloured lights you would most likely see in a dance pop/hip hop videos, bit be very rare in country music videos.
The angle and direction of the light can also determine the genre of the music video as it gives the audience clues about what time of day the scene is taking place. The quality of light in a scene can also hide or reveal things and influence the viewers reaction.

Props

In most music videos props are used to illustrate the narrative, and when linking the lyrics with visuals, props are commonly used. The props in a music video add to the entertainment side, and can be used in a fun imaginative way.

Costume

The costume is used to represent certain characters in different ways. Different artists would also wear different clothes to represent what they are portraying in the music video. Costume can also illustrate the narrative, and can relate to what the song is about. This is shown in the video were the costumes are reflecting the song, and have been used to create a imaginative, fun video also adding to the entertainment side.

Hair and Make-Up

The way an artists hair is, is done for a purpose so it can display a characters personality, or be done as a way of attracting the audience. Depending on the target audience. Hair like makeup is really just about style, and fashion and whats in fashion at the time. Its important that the appearance of the actor/artist is of good quality as they will be looked at by the audience. Hair and make-up can be displayed in many different ways, and can display different emotions, and stories.

Location

The location, and scene of a music video can not only show the audience were the artist is, but also can decide on genre, for instance locations such as the beach, car, party, club, etc; these sort of locations you would usually find in a pop music video, due to the happy lively nature they portray. The location influences the genre, but also relate to the song.

Colour

Colours are shown throughout music videos; they are presented through lighting, costumes, hair, makeup, locations. Colours are used in everyday objects and we generally see the use of colours throughout music videos displaying the genre, theme and storyline of the video. Colour can be used to represent a feeling, mood or to signify a certain thing.

Indie Pop Genre Research

I am considering using Indie Pop Genre for the song used for my music video, therefor I have researched and analysed a pop music video.

Two Door Cinema Club - Undercover Martyn

The video is very plain, including the three artists against a black background throughout the hole of the video.
The three artists are being held up by people in black all over outfits so you can barely see them, the artists are wearing bright coloured clothes to stand out from the background. The camera is filming from a birds eye view so it looks like the artist are 'floating'. The video is performance based with the artists sing to the camera and playing the guitar. Occasionalythe camera will do a close up of each artist from their shoulder's upwards. The men holding the three artists up will bring bright coloured fabric in patterns around the artists. Also at the end they release a load of bright coloured ballons up into the air.

Music Conventions of Indie Pop Videos
  • Mixture of narrative and performance
  • The band will often wear casual clothing
  • Colour of the video may vry depending on the lyrics and the tempo of the song
  • More of a teenage target audience

Pop Genre Research

I am considering using Pop Genre for the song used for my music video, therefor I have researched and analysed a pop music videos.

Britney Spears - Baby One More Time

This video is very bright, colourful, upbeat and fun; which presents pop genre, as most pop genre videos are like this by using these features.
The video starts off with Britney becoming impatient of waiting for the school bell to ring in class. Once the bell rings she breaks off into a performance video, including different dance scenes, in the hall, gym and outside. The storyline of the video is that she wants to be with a guy from her class. At the end of the video, she ends up back in the class room, sat waiting for the bell to ring and you realse the video was a day dream, whilst she was waiting.

Brief

For the AS media course I have a range of briefs I can select from. I have the choice of working in pair or alone. Once I have chosen the brief I wish to do, I will need to do a large sum of research relevant to my chosen topic and the analysis of existing media products. I will be creating a media portfolio of one main task and two smaller ancillary tasks. I will be posting my progress on this blog, to update and to present my progress.

The brief I have chosen to do:

A promotion package for the release of an album, to include a music promo video, together with two of the following three options:
  1. a website homepage for the band;
  2. a cover for its release as part of a digipak (CD/DVD package);
  3. a magazine advertisement for the digipak (CD/DVD package).
As well as creating a music promo video I have to create to smaller tasks to go with the main task, which is the music promo video. I feel creating an album cover digipak and a magazine advertisement will be best. I believe these are the best options for me as I created a magazine last year, so I will know the best way to design it, with incorporating the requirements needed as a magazine. I also think an album cover will be best as it will make my designing techniques stand out, and it will fit in with the music video.

Evaluation of AS Foundation Production module

Evaluation

How successful was my research of real media? How could my research skills be improved?
I think that my research of real media was detailed for what I needed; I feel I could've done further research into my topic, and research things that would've helped me, or furthered my project to the higher grade. I could've researched more magazines, to see different styles of magazines and how institutions used photography and editing. However I feel the research I did do, helped with designing and subjects to include in the magazine. Also I feel that I should've improved my research skills and by using different search techniques, like media books and magazines.

How successful was my audience research? How could I have made my results more meaningful in order to take them into account when producing my media product?
I feel that my audience research was lacking information. I feel like I didn't do enough research for my magazine, and did not include enough information for the research. However I did use the questionnaire as the main part as my audience research. As I felt I would get actually opinions of people's ideas and interests to create my magazine. I feel that if I did focus groups and looked into more different ways of getting the audiences opinions of my magazine, I would've gathered more information on their thoughts, it would've meant more to my audience and they would've enjoyed it more.

How successfully did I keep my blog up to date? How could I have made better use of its multimedia capacity?
At the beginning and near the end of the project I kept my work up-to-date. I was making my post's regularly, but I wouldn't upload them until they were completed, as I felt it gave an unprofessional, and un-tidy look to my blog. I feel that I could've used different types of bloggers multimedia servers to show different forms of presenting my work.

How successfully did I manage my time? How could I have organised my production more effectively? How could I have improved my planning and drafting process (and showing evidence of these stages for the examiner?
I feel that I managed my time well, but I could've done a lot better, to keep up to date with all my work, as I felt in the last few months of the project I had a lot of work to do. I feel my blog shows that I rushed slightly near the end of the project, but overall it turned out well. I finished the product by the dealine, I created my evaluation includng different bloggers multimedia servers and that I encluded enough detail for each part. However I feel that I could've added a lot more detail to each post, either by doing more research or by annotating in more detail.

How successfully did I follow the conventions of real media? Where could I have improved?
I feel I follwed the conventios of a real media magazine; including all the features of a real magazine; however I feel I didn't use the rule of 'Z' well on my magazine all together. I feel I could've included more informtaion on the Contents page. Although all together I am proud of the outcome of the magazine as a whole; I feel it follows magazine conventions, and could be passed a real magazine.

Which technology skills did I learn and develop? Which skills do I need to improve/learn in the future?
Through using InDesign, my skills developed greatly; when I first started using the software, I did not understand how to use the programme, but after practise and watching a tutorial video I learned how to use the software and understood how to use it to create my magazine. After doig my preliminary task I learned new techniques and did more research into real magazines, so I learnt how to improve my magazine. For the future tasks I need to improve and learn how to use video editing softwares and how to films properelly, so they camera stays in place. This will helpme produce a professional outcome in the future tasks.

How successful was my creation of my media text? Could I have improved or been more creative?
I feel the media text contexts I used was succesful. The interview I created for my double page spread, included questions and answers that would've drawn the audience into reading more. I do feel that I had to keep writing more t fill up the double page spread as in the first draft I didn't include enough information. I also feel the front page and contents page including enough detail to attract my reader into reading more; it shows the message and story I was trying to sell to the audience. However I feel I could've included more text on the Contents page.

Did my text fulfil the requirements of the brief in terms of Audience, Representation,Genre?
I feel my I did fulfil the requirements from the breif in my magazine. I feel my text did include the requirements from the brief; as it all linked into the genre of my music magazine, it didn't stray away from the genre and stayed incontext throughout the magazine. In the double page spread interview I included the artists personal life, their new album, songs coming up and how the artist created her work. I feel my genre kept to the requirements of the brief. Throughout the magazine I kept the genre and colourscheme the same. I feel this would attract the audience as it kept the same and didn't change throughout. I also feel my text kept to the genre, as I wrote an interview for a rock artist, so it didn't stray into a different genre.

How detailed was my evaluation? How could you have improved your discussion of the success of the finished product?
My evaluation was successful,  but could've been more detailed than it was. I could've gone into more detail answering the questions. Also I had difficulty using the bloggers multimedia servers, as they'd either not sure the correct instructions to add them to my blog, or the website would crash, or the links wouldn't work. So if a multimedia system I was using failed I had to think of a different method to use, which wouldn't always turn out the way I planned it too, or I had to include less detail.
